You may have hear (or maybe not), that Google is going to be changing on April 21st.
This change will affect your website.
As a result, there has been a bit of hysteria on the subject. But I want to dispell any misconceptions and give you the facts.
So here goes:
On April 21st, Google will be changing the way it grades websites for its search results.
Google publishes updates like this all the time, but this one is special since it has such a wide effect.
Here’s the result:
Websites that are not mobile friendly will now rank lower than those that are mobile friendly in search results.
But WAIT!
You may have already heard that (or maybe not)… But to add to the hysteria many people are now claiming this is going to PENALIZE your website if it’s not mobile friendly.
It won’t, but hear what it will do:
Mobile friendliness (meaning how well your site looks and functions on mobile devices) will become a factor in how Google ranks your website on April 21st but ONLY for searches on mobile devices.
So that means:
When someone does a search on their mobile device if your website is not mobile-friendly, it won’t show very high in the search results if other similar websites are mobile-friendly.
That means you could lose out!
You could lose out on a number of potential customers and traffic to your website if your site is not mobile friendly.
Google won’t give you a “penalty” per say. Instead, they won’t rank you very high in search results, so you’re going to see a drop in your website visitors.
I bet you don’t know this…
Do you know how much mobile traffic your site gets?
Let me tell you, most people have no idea at how much traffic their website gets and are amazed to find out how many people visit their site on a mobile device.
